Inheritance Tax Punishes Success and Hard Work

In a society where the government seems ever eager to dig deeper into our pockets, there’s an unsettling notion taking root: hefty inheritance taxes under the guise of leveling the playing field. Recently, there’s been talk about jacking up these taxes to a staggering 70% or more. Yes, you heard right. Our friends on the progressive side of the aisle are now eyeing our inheritances as a cash cow to fund what they call “public services” and “meritocracy.” Let’s be clear, though. This isn’t about fairness. It’s about penalizing success and discouraging family legacy.

The current inheritance tax rate in practice hovers around 40% once you cross a certain threshold. But that’s not enough for some. They want to raise it to absurd heights. The premise is simple, they argue: Use the inheritance tax to bolster public services and finance a so-called meritocracy. But in reality, what we’re witnessing is a blueprint for disincentivizing the hard work and dedication of generations. Why work hard to build a legacy if the government swoops in to redirect the fruits of your labor before your loved ones even get a chance to enjoy it?

There’s a startling embrace of a philosophy that says people shouldn’t have the right to pass on their life’s earnings to their children. This approach sends a blunt message: Your hard work belongs to the state. Instead of rewarding the industriousness that built the backbone of our nation, they propose punishing it. Instead of inspiring individuals to work hard to provide for their families, the plan encourages a dependency mentality on what the government might hand down from others’ efforts.

On the surface, redirecting tax revenues to lower income taxes sounds good. Let’s be real, though – the utopian promise that confiscating inheritances will somehow create a bustling meritocracy doesn’t pass muster. True meritocracies are born from equal opportunities, not equal outcomes imposed through draconian financial penalties. It’s laughable to claim that higher inheritance taxes will magically compel people to leap out of bed and be more productive. Who’s more productive when they’re discouraged from safeguarding a future for their family?

What’s at stake here is fundamental. It’s about the right of individuals to enjoy the fruits of their labor and transfer it to whom they see fit. It’s about maintaining the spirit of entrepreneurship, hard work, and individual freedom. The American Dream is traditionally about creating something bigger than oneself, not surrendering your life’s work to bureaucratic whims. This inheritance tax hike is a slippery slope. It’s folly to believe that punishing successful families will somehow fix society’s ills. Let’s keep our values close and taxes in check. After all, it’s our money, our legacy, and our decision about whom it benefits.
