Israel Calls Back Ambassadors After Countries Recognize Palestinian State
Israel has made the decision to recall its ambassadors from Norway, Spain, and Ireland after those countries announced they would recognize a Palestinian state on May 28. This move came after those countries expressed hope that the recognition would lead to a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway stated that their decision was in support of moderate forces and an investment in the only solution for lasting peace in the Middle East, referring to the “two-state solution” involving an Israeli and a Palestinian state existing peacefully side by side. Ireland and Spain followed suit with similar statements of support for the recognition of Palestine.

However, in response to this announcement, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz expressed strong opposition to the decision and called for the immediate recall of Israel’s ambassadors in those nations. He emphasized that Israel will not remain silent in the face of actions that undermine its sovereignty and security. Katz also condemned the countries’ choice to recognize a Palestinian state, stating that it rewards terrorism and undermines peace efforts. As a result, Israel will take further severe consequences in response to the decision.
Hamas and the Palestinian Authority expressed their approval of this move, while the decision was met with denouncement from both the left and the right in the United States. Many critics, including political figures, have condemned the decision as a reward for terrorism and an affirmation to terrorists that violent tactics are effective.
