Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has been the target of relentless attacks from the woke left simply for expressing her support for a woman in the UK who lost her job for stating biological facts about men and women. These woke activists have gone so far as to try to cancel Rowling and even publish her home address in a dangerous attempt to intimidate her. But Rowling has remained steadfast and has even declared that she would go to prison to defend her views on pronouns.

Recently, there was a video posted on the Secret Scholar Society YouTube channel featuring filmmaker Warren Smith engaging in a thought-provoking exchange with a student. The student had questioned Smith about his thoughts on Rowling, accusing her of being a bigot. However, Smith challenged the student’s biased assumptions and led him to reconsider his own viewpoints, ultimately causing the student to admit feeling like an “idiot” for his initial question.
This exchange reminded me of a legendary interview in 2023 between a leftist reporter and Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre. Just like Smith, Poilievre questioned the biased premises of every single question from the reporter. This is exactly what needs to be done by every teacher and professor in America. They should challenge students’ slanted viewpoints and encourage critical thinking rather than leading them towards a particular conclusion.
It is crucial for people to have opinions, but those opinions must be backed by facts. When individuals fail to support their opinions with evidence, they appear uninformed, just like the student in the video. Educators should not only question the basis of loaded questions but also resist the urge to influence their students’ beliefs. The goal should be to inspire independent thinking, as demonstrated by Warren Smith.
Imagine the positive impact we could have on our country if there were more teachers like Warren Smith. Our education system, especially journalism classes, could greatly benefit from his approach. Instead, we often encounter biased educators like Laurence Tribes and Jay Rosens who push their own agenda. We need more critical thinkers in the classroom to foster social, cultural, and political progress.
In a time when cancel culture and ideological conformity reign, it is refreshing to see someone like J.K. Rowling and educators like Warren Smith challenging the status quo and emphasizing the importance of free thought. It is through open dialogue, critical thinking, and intelligent debate that we can truly progress as a society.
