Judge’s Mistake Forces Resentencing for Paul Pelosi Attacker

A judge’s mistake will reopen the sentencing of David DePape, who attacked Paul Pelosi in the home he shares with Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). DePape was sentenced to 20 years for attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and 30 years for assaulting Paul Pelosi with a hammer, the maximum sentences for these charges.

DePape will receive credit for the 18 months he has spent in jail since his arrest. The judge acknowledged that she should have given DePape an opportunity to speak at the sentencing. A new hearing is scheduled for May 28.

During the initial hearing, there were no objections raised, but the prosecution promptly filed a motion after discovering the oversight. DePape’s defense has appealed the conviction.

From a conservative standpoint, there is concern regarding the judge’s significant error in not allowing the attacker to speak. This indicates a lack of attention to detail in a case involving a serious assault on elected officials.

It is positive that the judge did not draw comparisons between DePape’s actions and the events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol. The attack on the private home of an elected official should be treated seriously, and the maximum sentences reflect the severity of the crimes committed.

Additionally, it is reassuring that DePape will be deported after serving his sentence. This ensures that he will not pose a further threat to individuals in the United States. Such accountability is crucial for maintaining safety and order in society.
