The jury took less than an hour to convict Martinez-Hernandez on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, and kidnapping, underscoring the overwhelming evidence presented by prosecutors, including damning DNA analysis and testimony that left no doubt about his guilt.
This case is a tragic and infuriating example of the consequences of our nation’s broken immigration system. Martinez-Hernandez was not only in the country illegally, but he had also been apprehended multiple times at the border and was wanted for murder in his home country. Yet, due to lax enforcement and open border policies, he was able to slip through the cracks and commit unspeakable violence on American soil.
