Political gymnastics in the Democratic Party continue to astound those who have spent years watching the spectacle. The latest act features none other than Vice President Kamala Harris, who appears to have performed a dramatic pirouette on border policy faster than anyone can keep track. During a recent appearance on CNN NewsNight, host Abby Phillip pointed out the alarming contradiction in Harris’s stance on immigration. Once upon a time, while campaigning for the presidency in 2020, Harris supported the decriminalization of illegal border crossing. Now, she’s singing a different tune, claiming that enforcing existing immigration laws is the way to go.
Phillip did a commendable job of highlighting this glaring inconsistency, noting that Harris has failed to adequately explain the “delta” between her previous and current positions. The Vice President’s transformation from an advocate for lax border enforcement to a proponent of upholding immigration laws raises some significant questions. What led to this remarkable shift? Did she finally consult a magic eight ball, or perhaps someone suggested that voters might prefer a leader who doesn’t encourage law-breaking?

In a semi-credible defense, CNN Senior Political Commentator and former Obama adviser David Axelrod offered the theory that political advisors were the puppet masters behind Harris’s 2019 campaign. If that’s the case, one can only wonder if those same advisors are currently hiding under her desk, drowning in a panic about the upcoming election. The fact remains that Harris, now in a position of power, should be able to articulate her beliefs rather than lean on the invisible hand of her past advisors. If her “values” have shifted, the American people deserve a coherent explanation—especially when so much is at stake.
Harris isn’t the only one allegedly taking creative license with their political principles. Phillip didn’t shy away from mentioning that former President Donald Trump has also undergone some shifts in his positions over the years. This comment serves as a perfect reminder that the world of politics is often less about steadfast principles and more about the whims of current public sentiment. While Trump supporters might lend him a pass, the Democratic Party seems to have a habit of playing switcheroo with policies—especially those related to immigration.
As the irony unfolds, one thing remains clear: hypocrisy runs rampant in politics today. When even members of Harris’s own party call her out for a lack of clarity, it begs the question: are Democrats ready for 2024, or are they stuck navigating their own contradictions? Whether it’s a rapid change in border policy or a sudden reevaluation of values, the Democratic Party’s promises seem more gimmick than guarantee, setting the stage for an epic showdown in the upcoming election.
