The Democrats have once again showcased their knack for self-sabotage this election cycle, operating under the misguided assumption that their convoluted strategies can outrun reality. Their latest miscalculation came with the re-nomination of Donald Trump, which they mistakenly thought spelled doom for the Republicans. A June debate turned into a battle of wits, and it didn’t take long for Trump to put Joe Biden in a political headlock, leaving the incumbent fleeing from the race like a scared rabbit. Then, in a moment of pure delusion, they put their hopes on Kamala Harris, believing her cash-fueled, undemocratic rise to the top would somehow rejuvenate their party. Spoiler alert: it hasn’t.
Despite raking in over $1 billion in campaign funds, Harris still finds herself stuck in the mud, unable to dislodge Trump from his position. Her trail has been littered with gaffes more akin to a comedy show than a serious political campaign. In recent media appearances, she has struggled to project any coherent message, floundering when asked how she plans to distinguish herself from the former president. When a seasoned political operator like James Carville expresses his “fear” over Harris’ lack of momentum, it’s safe to say the party is in trouble. Their fears are compounded by the fact that Harris’s fundraising amounts, while stellar on paper, haven’t materialized into tangible polling advantages. This trend doesn’t suggest a bright future for her campaign.
Further complicating Harris’ woes are recent polls indicating she is trailing Trump in key states like Wisconsin and Michigan. These states have been touted as part of the so-called “blue wall,” and the cracks are starting to show. With numbers working against her, Harris’ supporters are propping up theories that she could have strong numbers but still lose. They might as well be predicting aliens will land in the Rose Garden—both scenarios seem equally plausible given the current trajectory.
As if the situation couldn’t get any worse, Barack Obama has added fuel to the fire by critiquing black men who either support Trump or refrain from backing Kamala. This is not the hallmark of a confident campaign; it’s a sign of a party in disarray, lashing out in frustration. With a candidate whose background and policy preferences veer into increasingly radical territory, the Democrats might want to reconsider their assumptions about this election cycle. The reality is they’ve backed a horse that appears destined for the glue factory while the rest of America watches with bemusement.
