Kamala Harris has made quite the name for herself as vice president, but behind that name lurks a reality that many seem desperate to ignore: she is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) hire. This isn’t merely a spicy opinion; it’s a provable fact that transcends party lines, something that even President Joe Biden himself has inadvertently confirmed. During a recent chit-chat session with the National Association of Black Journalists, Rachel Scott of ABC decided to poke the bear by asking whether it’s fair to label Harris as a DEI hire. Unsurprisingly, this straightforward question received a rather evasive response.
Donald Trump, facing the inquiry, managed to sidestep the loaded issue without delivering a knockout punch. Instead of directly addressing the DEI aspect of Harris’s position, he found himself in a quagmire, debating the complexities of her racial identity. His comments about Harris’s self-identification seemed to imply that maybe, just maybe, her rise to the vice presidency has more to do with her demographics than her policies. While he hesitated, Biden made a definitive statement during the 2020 campaign. He openly committed to selecting a woman as his running mate, with an emphasis on ethnicity that would ultimately direct the course of his choice.

Biden’s campaign promises were crystal clear—he intended to prioritize identity politics and it paid off, at least in a superficial sense. However, one has to wonder what happens to Democratic values when they find themselves cornered by their own policies. The same folks who recoiled at Trump’s acknowledgment of Harris’s DEI status were likely shouting from the rooftops about how DEI is a noble pursuit. One must ask, if hiring based on diversity is so virtuous, why does labeling someone a DEI hire sting so deeply?
The absurdity continues. If the true merit of individuals should give way to the DEI agenda, then the Democratic response to Harris’s identity should be in perfect harmony with their policy framework. Yet, the very term “DEI hire” becomes fodder for outrage and indignation. Harris’s supporters hold tight to the idea that her position should not be reduced to a mere checklist of her demographics. Still, when the Democrats themselves draft the rules of identity politics, they open the door to scrutiny about their motives.
In a nutshell, while opinions on Trump’s performance and rhetoric can vary, the cold hard truth remains: Kamala Harris is the epitome of a DEI hire. For those who think labeling her as such is an affront, one can only chuckle at the irony. Advocating for DEI practices and then getting offended at the label that comes with those practices is a perfect example of the contradictions plaguing modern liberalism. Biden set the stage for this drama, and Harris has danced right into it, fully aware of the script laid out for her. The audience is listening, and they aren’t buying the act.
