Democratic hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stirred up quite the controversy within his own family with a recent campaign ad. The ad, styled after his uncle President John F. Kennedy’s iconic 1960 campaign ad, prompted Kennedy to issue an apology to his family for the irritation it caused.
Kennedy was quick to clarify that the ad was not a product of his own campaign, but rather the work of a Kennedy super PAC. In an interview on Fox News, Kennedy expressed his love for the ad but admitted that he was aware it would irk some of his family members due to its use of traditional Kennedy imagery. “I don’t apologize for the ad, but I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, and it is an easy thing for me to do,” Kennedy explained.
Surprisingly, Kennedy confessed that he was unaware the ad would air during the Super Bowl, and even though he found it “very creative,” he stated that it was not the type of ad he would have chosen. This may raise questions about who exactly is in control of his campaign’s messaging.
Kennedy’s political journey has been turbulent, to say the least. After initially announcing his candidacy as a Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential race, he later switched tracks to run as an independent. This flip-flopping has not been received well by his own siblings, as four of them released a statement denouncing his independent run, emphasizing that he does not share the same values, vision, or judgment as their father.
The drama doesn’t end there. The Democratic National Committee has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, alleging illegal collusion between Kennedy’s presidential campaign and the super PAC in relation to ballot access. This move indicates growing concerns that Kennedy’s candidacy could pose a threat to President Joe Biden’s chances of re-election in November.
The tension within the Kennedy family, coupled with the legal accusations against his campaign, paints a chaotic picture of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s bid for the presidency.
