The Democratic Party is at it again, showcasing its blatant disregard for democratic principles in favor of political maneuvering. This time, their handling of presidential candidate selections raises eyebrows. Just like in 2016, when Hillary Clinton was favored over Bernie Sanders, we now see a similar pattern with Kamala Harris being thrust into the limelight without a fair contest. Choosing political favorites instead of letting the voters decide is nothing short of a slap in the face to democracy.
Recently, Kevin O’Leary, a prominent businessman and television personality, criticized this undemocratic trend during a popular political talk show discussion. He pointed out that the Democratic Party is playing games with candidates. In his analysis, he highlighted how the party sidelined true democratic processes, opting instead for backroom deals and political favors. Refusing voters to have a genuine say in who should lead is more than just disappointing; it speaks to a dangerous precedent.
It is important to remember that Kamala Harris did not gain enough support to continue her presidential campaign before Biden selected her as his running mate. She garnered minimal support, failing to clinch a significant number of delegates. Yet, suddenly, she was anointed as the vice-presidential candidate. This is the essence of the Democratic strategy—circumventing reality to push a preferred narrative. The electorate deserves a choice, not a predetermined outcome handed down from on high.
Furthermore, the 2016 election of Hillary Clinton raises many questions. Clinton was, at best, a polarizing figure among voters. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) actively undermined Bernie Sanders during the primaries, favoring Clinton even when evidence suggested she was not the party’s strongest candidate. The party denied voters a real choice, leading to a disenfranchised base and a loss in the general election. Seeing this pattern repeat with Harris is alarming, especially considering her lack of popularity and effectiveness.
The American people deserve candidates who can inspire and unite, not those who are simply installed based on party politics. This type of strategy treats voters like they are unimportant and offends the very values that underpin our democracy. Voters should have the opportunity to choose their leaders through fair competition. Celebrity endorsements and behind-the-scenes maneuvers do not equate to actual support from the electorate.
As these events unfold, it becomes clearer that the Democratic Party may not learn from its past mistakes. If they continue to favor political expedience over genuine representation, they risk further alienating their base and handing victories back to the Republicans. The era of backroom deals must end. It’s time for the party to focus on the people who are supposed to be in charge: the voters. Only by respecting the democratic process can they hope to regain trust and support from the public.
