Moments after former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, the maniacs on social media decided it was time for “Reichstag fire” to trend. It’s as if the Left has a checklist: Trump breathes, compare him to Hitler; Trump dodges a bullet, scream Reichstag fire.
The history lesson, for those who care, dates back to 1933 when the Reichstag building, home of Germany’s parliament, went up in flames. Adolf Hitler pounced on the opportunity, blaming communists and seizing the moment to strip away civil liberties from anyone who dared oppose the Nazis. So, naturally, Trump’s enemies are now hinting that he’s trying to pull the same stunt to pave his way to a dictatorship. The anti-Trump hysteria never ceases to amaze.

One notable addition to the cacophony of absurdity is Bruce Bartlett, a relic from the Reagan and Bush eras. Bartlett, who seems to have gone full NeverTrumper, predicted last week that Trump was scheming to stage an American version of the Reichstag fire to justify cracking down on his political opponents. As if on cue, hours after the attack, Bartlett patted himself on the back, suggesting the assassination attempt was Trump’s Reichstag moment. Talk about reaching.
Let’s also not forget General Mark Milley who, back in 2021, right before the January 6 Capitol protests, apparently fancied himself a historian and warned that Trump was steering the country toward its own Reichstag moment. Adding to the circus, Hillary Clinton, the queen of sore losers, compared a Trump rally to a Hitler rally.
And then there are the keyboard warriors on social media who couldn’t resist chiming in. They bravely hide behind their screens, throwing around the term “Reichstag fire” like it’s a frisbee at a college campus quad. Parroting the narrative, some armchair historians seem convinced that every dictator must stage a false flag event. They should probably stick to retweeting cat videos instead.
