A growing scandal has erupted surrounding Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, whose family has been accused in a Manhattan lawsuit of subjecting a gay assistant to relentless harassment that allegedly drove him to suicide. The details, laid bare in court documents and testimony from the assistant’s widower, paint a horrifying picture of abuse, neglect, and retaliation within a household that preaches progressive virtues but repeatedly fails to uphold the values it publicly champions. The assistant, Brandon O’Brien, worked for Wyden’s wife, Nancy Bass Wyden, owner of New York’s iconic Strand Bookstore, and was frequently tasked with caring for the Wyden children. According to the lawsuit, O’Brien was subjected to sexually explicit comments and exposure from the couple’s young daughter, while their teenage son allegedly hurled a stream of homophobic slurs, made violent threats, and assaulted him with thrown objects. Rather than address the appalling behavior, Nancy Bass Wyden and her legal team responded to O’Brien’s resignation with shocking accusations of theft and credit card fraud, turning the tables on their former assistant and attempting to destroy his reputation. These desperate moves were widely publicized to industry insiders and even involved hiring private investigators to dig into O’Brien’s personal life. Tragically, overwhelmed by harassment, slander, and betrayal, O’Brien took his own life in May, leaving his grieving husband to seek justice in a broken system.
