Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, best known for her dramatic exit from the Republican Party, is expected to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her role in the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riots. This committee, billed as a serious investigative body, turned out to be little more than a political circus, aimed at discrediting Donald Trump and the burgeoning MAGA movement. Instead of dismantling the movement, it only served to solidify Trump’s grip on the party, a fact that did not seem to faze Cheney, who was promptly booted from her own party during the primaries.
This honor is being viewed through a lens of skepticism, as many wonder about the authenticity of such awards coming from the Biden administration. There’s chatter around whether the President himself is even making these decisions or if he’s simply a figurehead being puppeteered from behind the scenes. Joe Biden has been conspicuously MIA recently, surfacing only occasionally to mumble a few lines in front of the cameras before retreating back to his metaphorical bunker. This behavior raises questions about the true nature of his leadership—or lack thereof.

Critics rightfully point out that the January 6 investigation was deeply flawed, with a committee composed entirely of members handpicked by Nancy Pelosi. This set-up all but guaranteed that the inquiries would be one-sided and devoid of any real accountability. Witnesses were rarely cross-examined, and the entire proceeding had the feel of a bad television drama rather than a legitimate investigation. While the mainstream media lapped up every second, discerning conservative voices saw it for what it was—a show trial aimed at destroying political opponents.
Adding fuel to the fire, Rep. Bennie Thompson from Mississippi is also being honored alongside Cheney. Thompson’s decision to refuse certification of George W. Bush’s 2004 win in Ohio is almost forgotten in the wake of this new medal celebration, although it’s worth pointing out that it was an act that many have called “armed rebellion.” How fitting is it that two people who have taken an adversarial stance toward their own party are now being celebrated by the very administration that claims to unify the nation?
This entire scenario is not just ironic; it’s downright repulsive. The idea that unelected bureaucrats and party insiders have control over significant moments in history like these awards is alarming. If the selection of medal recipients reflects the ideas and values of the Biden administration, then one has to wonder how many more misguided decisions are being made without any oversight or knowledge from an allegedly confused President. The American public deserves better than the murky politics and questionable honors being handed out under the guise of national unity.
