A massive winter storm has hit the United States, covering large parts of the country in a thick blanket of snow and ice. This storm is causing chaos for travelers, with over 30,000 flights being canceled or delayed. As people attempt to make their way to various destinations, many are finding themselves grounded as icy conditions grip some of the country’s busiest airports. In addition to travel troubles, more than one million customers are without power, which affects homes and businesses alike. It’s safe to say that thousands of people are feeling the cold reality of this winter weather.
One of the cities that has found itself in the storm’s path is Fayetteville, Arkansas. This area usually sees only about 7 to 10 inches of snow in an entire year, but as of this morning, residents reported a solid 3 to 6 inches already on the ground. Fayetteville’s Mayor, Molly Ron, wasted no time getting the city prepared for this unexpected wintry weather. Road crews have been working around the clock since Thursday morning, treating roads with salt brine and making sure that residents can safely navigate the snow-dusted streets.
Fayetteville does have a fleet of about 15 snowplows, and these hardworking machines have been busy treating around 480 miles of road with roughly 37,000 gallons of salt brine. Although the city is better prepared than some others in the region, challenges remain. The mayor indicated that the real trouble comes from the icy conditions that have formed after sleet fell overnight, turning the roads into a slippery mess. With I-49, a major travel route, covered in snow and ice, officials are urging residents to stay off the road unless absolutely necessary.
Driving on snow-covered roads can be tricky, and when ice is thrown into the mix, it becomes even more dangerous. The mayor highlighted the challenging hills in Fayetteville, which normally provide wonderful views but can create significant difficulties when slick with ice. Residents, not accustomed to these conditions, might find themselves stuck if they venture out. Fortunately, the road crews are on standby, ready to help, but it’s best for everyone to stay home and avoid putting themselves in perilous situations.
In addition to road safety, keeping the community warm and safe is also a priority during this storm. The city is deploying social workers to help identify unsheltered individuals and ensure they are not left out in the cold. With temperatures dipping, every effort is being made to keep everyone safe during this difficult weather.
While the worst of the storm will soon pass, road crews will continue working tirelessly in shifts to clear away the snow and ice.
