Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is working with President Joe Biden to help secure the 2024 election. Reports indicate that Lopez Obrador has stepped up efforts to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
Customs and Border Protection data shows that there has been a decrease in illegal crossings for the first time since 2021. In April, there were less than 180,000 immigrant encounters at the southern border. This is a result of Mexico’s Migration Policy Unit apprehending around 120,000 illegal immigrants for four consecutive months. This is a significant increase compared to previous years.

The surge in apprehensions comes in response to polls showing that illegal immigration is a top concern for voters leading up to the election. There has been a rush of illegal immigrants attempting to cross the border before November 5, fearing that former President Donald Trump would reinstate strict immigration policies if elected.
Since President Lopez Obrador has increased efforts to apprehend illegal immigrants, there has been a decrease in migrant encounters with U.S. federal immigration authorities. This has alleviated some of the pressure Biden has faced due to poor polling on the immigration issue. However, it is unclear whether Mexico will continue to crack down on illegal immigration after the U.S. election.
When Biden took office, he signed executive orders that reversed many of Trump’s immigration policies, leading to a significant increase in illegal aliens entering the United States.
