Mayorkas Skates Past Impeachment, Conservatives Stunned by Betrayal

In a tough blow to the conservative movement, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas narrowly escaped impeachment in the House on Tuesday. After months of intense preparation and rallying support, the House GOP fell short, with key Republicans defecting and siding with Democrats in the final vote.

The razor-thin margin of the vote, 214-216, left Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans reeling, particularly as they had made Mayorkas’s handling of the southern border a central issue in their campaign. The failure to impeach Mayorkas was a bitter disappointment for conservative lawmakers and their supporters.

Amidst the drama on the House floor, the roll call resulted in a rare 215-215 tie, and even a last-minute maneuver by Rep. Blake Moore to change his vote to no, in order to bring the issue up again, could not salvage the outcome.

The House GOP’s efforts to impeach Mayorkas were met with skepticism from within their own ranks, with Reps. Ken Buck, Tom McClintock, and Mike Gallagher breaking ranks to vote against impeachment. The dismay among conservative lawmakers was palpable as they expressed frustration with the leadership and the uncertainty of the outcome.

The failure to impeach Mayorkas dealt a significant blow to the conservative base, with Rep. Ralph Norman lamenting the missed opportunity and the challenges ahead. The conservative movement now faces the daunting task of regrouping and enduring weeks of scrutiny and accusations from the liberal media and Democrats.

Despite this setback, there is optimism among conservative circles as plans to reintroduce the articles of impeachment next week are in motion. While Mayorkas’s survival in the face of impeachment was a setback for conservative Republicans, the battle is far from over, and the fight will continue in the weeks ahead.
