Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has made a bold and powerful endorsement in the race to find his replacement. McCarthy announced his support for Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), and he couldn’t be more confident that Jordan will come out victorious in a floor vote. Talk about a ringing endorsement!
McCarthy, when asked about the progress of the process, assured reporters that things were “going well” and expressed his belief that a new House Speaker will be elected “shortly.” And with his unwavering support for Jordan, it’s clear that McCarthy is ready to pass the torch and let Jordan take the reins.
When questioned about whether he would support Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) as an alternative candidate, McCarthy didn’t even hesitate. He made it clear that his loyalty lies with Jordan, stating firmly, “I’m going to support Jim.” Scott, recognizing the overwhelming support for Jordan in the conference vote, gracefully accepted defeat and encouraged his backers to rally behind Jordan.
But will Jordan be able to muster the necessary votes on the floor? McCarthy thinks so, but he’s cautiously optimistic. He knows that convincing Republican members who are still fuming about the motion to vacate won’t be easy. However, McCarthy’s confidence in Jordan’s ability to bring compromise and unity to the party may just be the push needed to secure victory.
Amidst this high-stakes battle for the speakership, Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL) stands strong in his support for Kevin McCarthy. Rutherford believes that a small minority should not have the power to override the majority. “I’m a no on allowing Matt Gaetz and the other seven to win by putting their individual in as speaker,” Rutherford declared with conviction. He recognizes that McCarthy has the experience and leadership necessary to guide the party to success.
Meanwhile, McCarthy himself urged the conference to unite and dismissed any calls for his return. He made it clear that the focus should be on solving the current problem at hand, not dwelling on the past. McCarthy has faith in the path they are on, and he firmly believes that Jim Jordan would excel in the role of Speaker.
