Media’s Overreaction To Trump’s Inauguration Reaches New Heights Of Absurdity And Bias

The latest inaugural festivities for Donald Trump might not have rivaled the hyped apocalypse that followed the 2017 event, but the media’s response was still a delightful spectacle of overreaction and melodrama. MSNBC trotted out their usual suspects to throw mildly disguised insults. Back in 2017, Chris Matthews had a bit of a meltdown, comparing Trump to Hitler—an overreach even for him. This time around, the media still managed to dial up the absurdity, particularly with sneering critiques regarding the billionaire attendees at Trump’s inauguration. Poor ABC was practically clutching its pearls, fretting about the presence of wealthy individuals and declaring that their very existence disqualified Trump from being a champion of the working class. Meanwhile, tech billionaires seem to have jumped on the MAGA train, making these outraged commentaries even more comical.

CNN’s coverage veered from plain weird to outright cringe. They couldn’t resist taking jabs at Melania Trump’s fashion choices, which were described as reminiscent of British royal staff rather than an American First Lady. The irony here is thicker than a Brooklyn accent—while the networks obsess over attire, they ignore the profound messages of victory being put forth. Anderson Cooper and his fashion critic sidekick had quite the giggle fest, seemingly oblivious to the weightiness of the occasion they were supposed to be reporting on.

Van Jones from CNN appeared to be reeling in despair—though one has to wonder if he ever really exits that state. In what could only be described as a comedic performance, he proclaimed Joe Biden as “Mr. America First,” which prompts one to ask: does semantics even matter at this point? And while Trump was basking in the glow of a new beginning, the media clutched their pearls and attempted to weave a narrative about how Trump’s supporters were somehow driven by greed and corruption. Joy Reid’s over-the-top musings about Trump being the “great Christian president” who would do nothing but harm vulnerable groups is the kind of gaslighting that even seasoned political commentators must find exhausting.

MSNBC, never one to remain silent for long, was particularly busy during Trump’s inaugural speech. They avoided broadcasting his remarks altogether, opting instead to present their own unhinged commentary as “coverage.” Their selective silence was reminiscent of an old-school magic trick—now you see it, now you don’t—but the only trick here was their ability to ignore a sitting president speaking while they continued to whine about their candidate losing.

Adding to this politically charged circus was Elon Musk, who captivated supporters with exuberant remarks and gestures described by those on the left as close to Nazi salutes. This outlandish leap in logic would be laughable if not for the constant barrage of baseless insinuations about anyone daring to step off the left’s narrow worldview. When Musk declared, “This is what victory feels like,” the left seemed to rocket him into the conspiracy hall of fame quicker than a Tesla can go from zero to sixty. The reaction from CNN was telling; instead of embracing what was clearly an expression of enthusiasm, they grasped at straws, implying some form of extreme behavior without actually coming out and stating anything concrete.

As expected, the media could not resist dragging the specter of the January 6 riot into the fray, bemoaning the fact that the newly elected Trump dared to address the American people in the same vicinity. Meanwhile, they remained resolutely quiet about President Biden’s own last-minute pardons for family members embroiled in what many perceive to be questionable dealings—yet another instance showcasing the stark hypocrisy of the press. This all builds a picture not just of bias, but of a frantic attempt to salvage any semblance of a narrative amid the reality of their ongoing declines in ratings and trustworthiness.

For all the fervor and theatrics, it became clear: much like Trump himself, the left can’t seem to handle the fact that he remains an indomitable figure in American politics. The whines from the left were palpable—like a toddler who refuses to accept defeat at their own game. In the grand scheme of things, the continuing drama surrounding Trump’s presidency provides a rich source of comedy, serving as a reminder that a good laugh can often highlight the absurdity of the situation.
