In a significant meeting this week, Ukrainian First Lady Elena Zalinska joined forces with America’s First Lady, Melania Trump, to tackle crucial issues surrounding education and the challenge of bringing home Ukrainian children who have been abducted by Russia. This historic gathering took place at the White House, where the two prominent figures spoke about the grim realities faced by children in war-torn Ukraine. With the participation of leaders from 40 other countries, it was an event that underscored the importance of children’s safety, especially in this digital age of online learning.
The context of this conversation stems from the ongoing war and the impact it has had on education in Ukraine. With the COVID-19 pandemic as a backdrop, many Ukrainian children found themselves learning online even before the full-scale invasion began. But under the shadow of the war, this situation has worsened significantly. About one-third of Ukrainian children are currently forced to learn online due to safety concerns, and the education gap between them and their peers in the European Union continues to widen. The challenges are particularly severe for those children living on the front lines, where bomb shelters are often the new classrooms.
Zalinska highlighted the dire circumstances children are facing, which include night-time interruptions from air raids and the need to seek shelter. This is not conducive to fostering a normal childhood, and the emotional toll it takes on young ones is immense. The effort to return children to on-site learning is ongoing, but progress is painfully slow due to the war. Schools can only reopen if they have bomb shelters, leaving many children still in limbo. As the Ukrainian government continues its search for approximately 20,000 missing children, they welcome the recent injection of $25 million from the Trump administration aimed at bolstering their efforts.
In part of their collaboration, Melania Trump’s advocacy is said to be vital in bringing attention to this heartbreaking issue. The ongoing effort involves working with international partners to gather information about the abducted children and pushing for their return. However, the task is daunting given that Russia goes to great lengths to obfuscate the whereabouts of these kids, often complicating any attempts to verify lists of their names. So far, only about 2,000 children have been returned, and if the situation does not improve, the timeline for bringing the remaining children home could stretch on for decades.
One of the more haunting topics discussed was the investigation by the United Nations, which has labeled Russia’s mass deportation of Ukrainian children as a crime against humanity. Reports suggest that these children are being stripped of their identities and subjected to military indoctrination, all while being separated from their families. Zalinska expressed skepticism about whether the rest of the world truly comprehends the horrors that Ukrainian children are currently facing, pointing out that it is challenging to appreciate the pain from a distance. But no matter how tough the situation becomes, she assured that Ukrainians hold onto hope, particularly that their strong partnership with the United States will continue to endure.
As the conflict enters its fifth year, personal strength and a sense of duty drive Zalinska and her husband, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
