For years, Americans have been fed a steady diet of the same, unchanging number: 11 million illegal immigrants reside in the United States. This statistic has been bounced around for over two decades like a beach ball at a summer concert, and it hasn’t budged. One can’t help but wonder if this is the world’s most miraculous stable population or just another narrative cooked up by those who wish to downplay the true scale of illegal immigration.
Dating back to 2005, it was reported that the undocumented population had reached nearly 11 million. Fast forward to 2013, and lawmakers were still discussing ways to address the same “estimated” 11 million. Let’s pause for a moment of skepticism. In a nation where the number of unique dog breeds is growing faster than the U.S. economy, are we really to believe that not a single person has tipped this number over the edge?
By 2017, there was still talk of providing a pathway for the same 11 million undocumented individuals. The apparent precision of this figure almost feels like a running gag among policymakers. It’s as if every incoming president adopts this number like a cherished family heirloom, passing it along without question or adjustment.
So, what does all this tell us? Well, it’s evident to anyone with their eyes wide open that this static number serves a purpose.
