A recent episode of NBC’s “Meet the Press” turned into a prime-time edition of the Trump Show, as political correspondent Steve Kornacki reported on a batch of new polling numbers that puts the former President Donald Trump ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris. The media has a knack for dramatic reveals, and this round of polling was no exception, showing that even the mainstream media finds it hard to ignore the momentum building behind Trump.
According to Kornacki, four new polls have emerged over just a few days, showing what he modestly described as “very small” but potentially meaningful shifts favoring Trump. It’s worth noting that these incremental gains might just be stirring the pot for a more explosive outcome in the coming election. The CNBC poll shows Trump leading by two points, while a Wall Street Journal poll gives him a three-point edge over Harris. Even with CNN and The New York Times dipping into the mix, they can’t quite give Harris a comfortable lead, with the latter two reporting a tied race.

Further complicating matters for Harris is the fact that when Kornacki laid out the national polling average, he had to explain that while she still leads, her once-comfortable margin has slipped to a mere 1.2 points. Just weeks ago, her lead was five times that, and now it looks like she could lose even her slim advantage. It’s almost as if the public is beginning to awaken from its slumber, finally realizing that maybe—just maybe—the alternative to a Biden presidency isn’t Harris, but a tried-and-true Trump.
This polling news certainly isn’t what Harris and her supporters want to hear, as the dwindling numbers reveal a growing wave of support for Trump that hasn’t vanished despite the relentless negative narratives aimed at him. Perhaps the American electorate is getting wise to the game being played here; after all, it’s hard to sell the same old ideas with the same old cast of characters when some Americans are viewing the world with fresh eyes.
With every shifting number, the race continues to tighten, leaving supporters of the current administration banging their heads against the walls of their bubble. As Trump’s support grows, it remains to be seen how the Democrats will react. Will they double down on their usual strategies, which have proven less than effective? Or might they start searching for someone who can actually stand toe-to-toe with the man who unseated their golden boy in 2016? If recent polling trends are any indication, they might need to work fast before the train leaves the station without them.
