Democratic lawmakers in New Jersey are rebelling against plans to turn Atlantic City International Airport into a “sanctuary” for illegal immigrants, a move proposed by the Biden administration. Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat himself, expressed concerns over the state’s ability to handle an influx of illegal immigrants from New York City.

He stated that Atlantic City or any other part of New Jersey would not be able to accommodate such a program. Candidates for the state legislature, Caren Fitzpatrick, Alphonso Harrell, and Lisa Bender, released a joint statement warning about the negative impact it would have on their region and residents. Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr., also a Democrat, criticized the city for being a “perennial dumping ground” during a press conference.

This immigration issue could potentially have consequences for the Democratic Party in the upcoming election in New Jersey. President Biden’s approval rating in the state is already low, and Democratic Senator Bob Menendez is facing pressure to resign due to bribery charges. Republican campaign consultant Chris Russell sees an opportunity to exploit the migrant issue in South Jersey legislative races, stating that “This is a Democrat problem that they have, and they own it lock stock and barrel.”
Both Republicans and Democrats in Atlantic County are determined to resist any attempts to send illegal immigrants there. Republican Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson stated that the county is already financially struggling and cannot afford the burden of housing illegal immigrants. Governor Murphy acknowledged the importance of immigration but emphasized the need for proper control and regulation.
