America’s cities are at a breaking point as the consequences of failed federal immigration policy come home to roost. Local leaders from both sides of the aisle, including those in border cities like El Paso and Brownsville, have sounded the alarm about the immense strain that unchecked migration is placing on their communities. The reality is simple: cities are being asked to shoulder burdens that rightfully belong to the federal government, and taxpayers are paying the price.
It’s no secret that the cost of managing the influx of migrants is staggering. Recent reports show billions of dollars are being diverted to process, house, and transport migrants—money that could have gone to support local schools, seniors, and affordable housing. Instead, cities are left scrambling to cover shortfalls, while Washington dithers. This is not just a matter of dollars and cents; it’s about the priorities of our nation. American citizens should not have to compete with illegal immigrants for resources and services in their communities.
The issue of sanctuary cities has only made matters worse. By refusing to cooperate fully with federal immigration enforcement, these jurisdictions have created safe havens for those who break our laws, including dangerous criminals. Congressional hearings have highlighted how these policies obstruct ICE’s ability to remove criminal aliens, putting American lives at risk and undermining the rule of law. It’s time to end the charade that sanctuary policies make us safer—they do not. Instead, they embolden criminal networks and erode trust in our institutions.
While compassion for newcomers is a hallmark of American values, it cannot come at the expense of law-abiding citizens. Cities must care for their residents, but that duty must be balanced with maintaining order and protecting public safety. The federal government must step up, secure the border, and enforce immigration laws so that local governments can focus on serving their communities rather than cleaning up Washington’s mess.
The path forward is clear: restore accountability at the federal level, prioritize border security, and ensure that cities are not left to bear the brunt of failed policies. Americans deserve leaders who put their interests first, uphold the law, and protect the safety and prosperity of their communities. Anything less is a betrayal of the public trust.
