Gavin Newsom’s latest attempt to take a jab at President Trump has backfired badly, exposing once again his penchant for political grandstanding instead of addressing real problems. Over the weekend, Newsom criticized Trump for “dancing in Asia” while millions of Americans face the threat of losing crucial food aid amid the government shutdown. But rather than earning support, Newsom quickly found himself the target of widespread ridicule online, reminding many of the California governor’s own history of double standards during the pandemic.
It’s hard to take Newsom’s moral outrage seriously when just a couple of years ago, he was caught dining maskless at an upscale restaurant during strict lockdowns that he imposed on everyday Californians. His double life only deepens the public’s skepticism about his sincerity. Meanwhile, President Trump has been focused on advancing diplomacy and economic deals across Asia, working to restore America’s standing abroad and improve opportunities here at home—efforts that deserve recognition rather than cheap political potshots.

What Newsom and other left-wing leaders conveniently ignore is the root cause of the food aid crisis hitting American families: Senate Democrats’ refusal to pass a clean spending bill. The Department of Agriculture made it clear that emergency funds intended for genuine crises won’t be tapped unless necessary. The real blame lies with the lawmakers holding the government hostage, prioritizing political theater over relief for struggling Americans.
Newsom’s deflection serves as a perfect example of the liberal tendency to avoid responsibility by pointing fingers at others. His previous missteps abroad, including a clumsy incident at a basketball game in Asia, paint a picture of leadership focused more on optics than outcomes. Californians and Americans deserve leaders who put pragmatic solutions ahead of partisan attacks and personal posturing.
At the end of the day, governing requires tough decisions—not endless tweets and finger-pointing. If Newsom and his allies are serious about helping the American people, they must stop playing politics and start working with those who genuinely seek to end the shutdown. Until then, citizens will remain wary of leaders more interested in scoring points than solving problems.
