California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to kick off a special legislative session, presumably to showcase his fighting spirit (or perhaps his desperation) just two days after the presidential election. The Democrat is gearing up for a righteous battle against the Trump administration on a laundry list of issues, including abortion, climate change, immigration, and transgender rights. It’s almost as if Newsom is trying to ensure that California remains at the forefront of progressive nightmares for another round.
The timing of this announcement could not be more transparent. As the state once again preps itself to obstruct the will of the federal government, one can’t help but recall Gov. Newsom’s proud history of filing over 100 lawsuits against the last Trump administration. Talk about staying in the game! Newsom proclaimed that the freedoms Californians cherish are under siege, and he’ll be damned if he lets anyone sit idle while he prepares to duel yet again.
Slated to commence on December 2, this special session will center around funneling even more cash into the state attorney general’s office to wage legal war against the federal government’s supposed “unlawful actions.” This initiative has all the hallmarks of a political theater piece designed to galvanize the liberal base, all while ignoring actual issues plaguing the state, like rampant crime and crippling homelessness. Because clearly, endless lawsuits against the federal government are the solution to California’s woes.

Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher aptly characterized this legislative stunt as little more than a desperate grab for attention. He noted that the issues Newsom claims need urgent attention could have easily been handled during the regular legislative session come January. Instead, Newsom appears more keen on bolstering his image ahead of a potential presidential run in 2028, all while California’s cities continue to degrade.
It turns out California is not alone in this self-important crusade. Other Democrat-led states like New York and Illinois are jumping on the anti-Trump wagon as well. New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James have also promised to protect their progressive laws against the federal administration, branding themselves as champions of injustice—because who can resist a good scrap in the name of “justice”? They’ve already lined up almost a hundred legal actions against Trump’s first term, but it didn’t really stop the state from spiraling into a financial abyss, did it?
As Newsom, Hochul, and others prepare to go to battle in this legal sleeper match, one major question hangs in the air: will they ever focus on the real issues their constituents face daily? The cities run by these governors are plagued with crime, homelessness, and rising living costs, but rather than tackling these problems head-on, their priorities seem to lie in an ongoing battle against Trump that many voters simply do not care about. But perhaps grandstanding is a more effective means of avoiding responsibility in the eyes of these politicians, as they prepare to put on another show for their adoring leftist fans.
