In a recent article for USA Today, K.D. Drummond explores the possibility of the Dallas Cowboys trading quarterback Dak Prescott to the Chicago Bears in exchange for quarterback Justin Fields. Drummond acknowledges that the safe bet is on Prescott returning to the Cowboys, considering his salary cap impact of $62 million for the upcoming season. However, Drummond points out the fiscal advantage of acquiring Fields, as he only made around $2.3 million in the 2023 season. In addition, the draft picks that could come with trading Prescott would provide the Cowboys with a range of options.
From the Bears’ perspective, Drummond suggests that adding Prescott instead of a rookie quarterback would instantly boost their credibility and playoff chances. Being a rookie General Manager, Ryan Poles didn’t draft Fields himself, so tying the team’s future to a quarterback he wasn’t responsible for might not be the wisest move.

Another analysis on the potential trade is provided by Anthony Licciardi in Sports Illustrated. Licciardi notes that Dallas has recently experienced three consecutive 12-5 seasons without much success in the playoffs. He highlights the need to pay star players and the aging of generational talents as additional factors to consider in the decision-making process. While Prescott has the ability to veto any trade, Licciardi believes that if he were to accept a trade to Chicago, both he and the Cowboys would benefit financially. The Cowboys could then put Fields behind their exceptional offensive line, giving them a competitive edge for a playoff spot if their defense performs well.
However, Licciardi acknowledges that Chicago has its own set of issues to deal with, including the staff turnover during the season. Despite the theoretical possibilities, moving on from Prescott doesn’t appear to be the preferred option when considering all the variables involved. With the potential trade, the Bears could acquire a quarterback they didn’t initially draft, but the uncertainty regarding their coaching staff may hinder their progress.
While the opinions of experts vary, only time will tell if the Cowboys and Bears will explore this trade and what impact it could have on both teams’ future.
