New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) is at it again, defending her unjustifiable and utterly unconstitutional 30-day ban on law-abiding citizens’ right to carry firearms. Grisham claims that this blatant disregard for the Second Amendment is a necessary step to combat gun crime. But guess what? Less than 24 hours after she signed this ridiculous order, a fatal shooting occurred. Well, well, well, it looks like her grand plan to disarm law-abiding citizens isn’t exactly working out now, is it?
According to reports from KOAT, the Albuquerque Police responded to a shooting in the southwest part of the city on Saturday morning. When they arrived, they discovered one person had been shot and rushed them to the hospital. Sadly, that person later died. It’s heartbreaking to see innocent lives lost, but it’s even more infuriating to know that this tragedy took place mere hours after Grisham’s unconstitutional ban.
Of course, criticism and legal challenges have been piling up for Grisham since she issued the executive order. It’s not only Republicans and responsible gun owners who are up in arms, but even staunch anti-gun Democrats are raising their eyebrows at her overreach. Representative Ted Lieu (D-CA), someone who knows a thing or two about gun control, spoke out against Grisham’s order and rightly pointed out that no state can simply suspend the federal Constitution. It’s as if they missed that day in law school when they taught about the US Constitution.
In response to Lieu’s valid concerns, Governor Grisham fired back and arrogantly claimed that she does indeed have the authority to dictate what law-abiding citizens can do with their firearms. Sorry, Grisham, but that’s just not how it works. The Second Amendment guarantees citizens’ right to bear arms, and no governor – no matter how power-hungry – has the right to trample on our constitutional rights.
It’s truly astonishing to see a governor so vehemently defend her unconstitutional actions. It’s almost as if Grisham believes she’s above the law and can do whatever she pleases. Well, newsflash, Governor: you were elected to serve the people, not to trample on their rights. Maybe it’s time for Grisham to take a step back, reevaluate her priorities, and start focusing on real solutions to combat crime instead of infringing on law-abiding citizens’ liberties. Then again, that would require a governor who actually respects and upholds the Constitution – and unfortunately, she seems to be lacking in that department.
