Barack Obama reportedly had a heart-to-heart conversation with Joe Biden before he decided to run for president, telling him that it wasn’t necessary and warning him about his faults. Obama, who knows a thing or two about being president after serving two terms, understood that Biden’s bumbling style would not be a good fit for the job. It’s no secret that Obama and Biden both despise Donald Trump, but even that couldn’t convince Obama to fully support Biden’s presidential aspirations.

Now, with the recent scandal involving the Biden family’s alleged bribery and influence peddling, Obama must decide whether or not to release emails that could further implicate Joe and his son Hunter. These emails, some of which were written under fake names, discuss matters related to Hunter’s questionable business dealings while Joe was vice president. The National Archives has these communications, and Obama has about a month to decide whether or not to make them public.
Jonathan Turley, a law professor, argues that Obama should release the emails, considering his administration’s previous policy of subjecting all emails to Freedom of Information Act requests. However, Obama has never been a champion of freedom of the press or House Republicans, as evidenced by the phone number farming for Associated Press reporters and spying on Fox News reporter James Rosen during his tenure. It seems unlikely that Obama will suddenly change his ways and prioritize transparency over protecting his former vice president.
The issue at hand is not just the use of fake names in emails, but the nature of the content discussed in those emails. Biden’s use of aliases might have been defended in the past, but these emails go beyond innocuous chatter. They include discussions about official foreign travel plans, the hiring of Hunter’s associates for high-level positions, and connections to Biden’s son’s clients. This information could shed light on the extent of Joe’s involvement in his son’s dealings, contradicting his previous denials.
The media has started to acknowledge that Hunter was involved in influence peddling, and there is evidence to support this claim. Bank records show that he received millions of dollars from questionable sources, and his influence over his father’s decisions, such as the firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor investigating the company Hunter was associated with, cannot be dismissed as a coincidence. There are also allegations of a $10 million bribe received by Joe and Hunter from the same company.
With a special counsel appointed to investigate Hunter’s deals, congressional inquiries are in full swing. But the testimony of the special counsel, David Weiss, is crucial to completing the puzzle, and obtaining it has proven to be a significant obstacle. Republicans may have to resort to impeachment to secure the necessary witness testimony and documents. And in this puzzle, a major piece is in the hands of Barack Obama. Whether he chooses to release the emails or continue protecting his former vice president remains to be seen.
