A newly released video sheds light on the behind-the-scenes antics of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi following the January 6 Capitol riot, illuminating the extent to which she was plotting retribution against Donald Trump. This treasure trove of politically charged drama was captured by Pelosi’s daughter for an HBO documentary and has surfaced thanks to the insatiable curiosity of the House Committee on Administration. It appears that the only thing more gripping than the events of January 6 was the reaction from the highest levels of Democrat leadership.
Pelosi, in a state of dramatic distress, expressed her indignation over what she perceived as Trump’s dastardly deeds against both the Capitol and the nation. She was ready to declare him a “domestic enemy,” a phrase that would make anyone wonder if she’d been watching too many spy thrillers. Yet, when it came time to finalize her statement, she must have thought better of it. Perhaps describing a former president as a “domestic enemy” just didn’t sound good at cocktail parties or with campaign donors.
Notably, the footage also reflects a mindset that is all too familiar in liberal circles—the idea that elevating their political agenda often requires painting opponents in the darkest possible light. After the release of Trump’s first video addressing the riot, Pelosi accused him of insurrection, conveniently sidestepping her own party’s mixed messages about the events that day.
