Pope Francis Ditches Tradition, Preps His Own Final Resting Place!

Pope Francis, known for his candid interviews, revealed in a recent conversation with Mexican television that he has already chosen a burial site for himself, although he doesn’t anticipate needing it anytime soon. The 87-year-old pontiff expressed his desire to be laid to rest in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, located just outside Vatican City but still within Rome. According to the Telegraph, this is a departure from the tradition of previous popes who were buried within the Vatican.

In a jovial tone, Pope Francis shared, “The place is already prepared.” He explained that he often stops at the basilica to pray before a beautiful Byzantine-style painting of Mary holding baby Jesus. This spiritual practice is an expression of his deep devotion. The Pope, however, added that when old age catches up and his body reaches its limits, it’s important to prepare oneself. In that vein, he plans to introduce a new funeral ritual while scaling back the pomp and circumstance associated with the papal funeral ceremony.

Despite his battles with various health issues, Pope Francis remains positive and upbeat. Reuters reported that he is feeling improved and hasn’t let his ailments dampen his spirits. “Sometimes I’m told I’m not prudent because I feel like doing things and moving around,” he quipped. “I guess those are good signs, no? I am quite well.”

In the past year, Pope Francis has stood up to his conservative critics within the Catholic Church, taking a firmer stance. He stated that some individuals require a “bit of standing up to.” Although his illnesses have curtailed his travels, he revealed plans to visit Belgium next year and is also considering trips to Polynesia and his native Argentina.

However, the pontiff acknowledged that all journeys must now be reevaluated due to his health limitations. “There are limits,” he conceded. Despite criticism from the recently elected Argentine President Javier Milei during the election campaign, the Pope disclosed that he had received an invitation to return home. He expressed the need to differentiate between campaign rhetoric and actual intentions.

As for his future plans, Pope Francis has no intention of stepping down at this time. However, he stressed that if circumstances dictate, he would be willing to resign. “I ask the Lord to say enough, at some point, but when he wants me to,” he concluded with a touch of humor.
