Rep. Scott Perry from Pennsylvania recently took to The Alex Marlow Show to share the silver lining on the otherwise dreary cloud of a continuing resolution (CR). While conservatives generally approach CRs like a cat approaches a bath, Perry boldly proclaimed that this temporary funding measure is just what Republicans need to get back in gear. Not only does it freeze government spending for six months, but it also gives the GOP a fighting chance to finally get serious about cutting costs and squashing inflation.
As the former head of the House Freedom Caucus, Perry has seen the inside workings of Congress and knows how it typically veers off course with giant omnibus bills. These omnibus monstrosities are like the dreaded dinner invite that you cannot decline but deep down know you wish you could. Perry cheerfully noted that the CR prevents the leadership from cramming another of those behemoth spending bills down everyone’s throat— a move that could have sent conservatives into full-blown despair.
In a twist of fate, Perry indicated that the CR allows Republicans to shift focus to Trump’s agenda. With the 47th president in charge, the atmosphere has changed. Where past CRs maintained the bloated spending habits of the Biden administration, now, Perry believes the Trump administration will actively work to cut unnecessary expenditures. No more funding for Planned Parenthood or other wasteful programs; it’s time for a fiscal cleanup, and Perry is here for it.

The representative even mentioned a valuable perk of the current CR: it blocks billions in earmarks. It seems there were at least a few unhappy lawmakers who had gotten used to their pet projects being snuggled into those larger bills. One particularly disgruntled GOP member expressed frustration over losing his precious carveouts, only to confront Perry about it. Perry did not shy away from the reality; he’s not looking to indulge those whims, and rightly so. Members of Congress are not supposed to be handing out cash like it’s candy at Halloween.
Almost prophetically, Perry cast a long-term vision where the CR lays the groundwork for getting Trump’s big, beautiful bill signed into law—something that could include fortifying the border and extending the tax cuts that got many Americans dancing in the streets back in 2017. With a renewed focus on balancing the budget, Perry acknowledged that it’s a journey, not a sprint. But with Trump supporters’ backing, he believes that they will make the tough calls necessary to reign in wasteful spending, rein in inflation, and ensure that Congress won’t put the brakes on Trump’s legacy. It’s a bold plan, and if anyone can rally conservatives around it, it’s Rep. Perry.
