Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer made headlines over the weekend while insisting that the Democrats did not mislead the American public regarding President Biden’s mental fitness. This assertion seems like an attempt to say “nothing to see here” while reports claim that Mr. Biden’s mental acuity was in question long before he ever stepped onto the world stage as president. It appears that while the Democrats are racing forward with their own version of reality, the facts are waving goodbye in the rearview mirror.
During a segment on NBC News, Schumer defended Biden, touting his “amazing record” and suggesting that the president has accomplished more significant legislation than any president since Lyndon Johnson. It’s amusing to think that Schumer can spin Biden’s record like a DJ at a wedding, while millions of conservative Americans are shaking their heads. After all, the only thing Biden seems to have contributed that truly dominates headlines is a series of gaffes and a cognitive capacity that appears to be on vacation more than he is.
In an all-too-familiar pattern, Democrats are expertly dodging reality and singing praises from the mountaintops about a leader whose mental lapses are well documented. Reports reveal that Biden’s staff has been forced to make adaptations to accommodate what has been described as a “diminished leader.” Meetings that should leverage the president’s insights were routinely shortened or canceled outright if Biden was “off,” and aides needed to play defense like the backup quarterback in a desperate game. It’s somewhat astonishing that they expect the public to believe everything is just peachy in the White House.

Schumer’s insistence on Biden’s mental fitness sits in stark contrast to the concerns voiced in various media outlets. Notably, CBS News reporter Jan Crawford recently pointed out what she calls Mr. Biden’s “obvious cognitive decline,” suggesting this reality has been woefully underreported. One might imagine that if Biden were to put his views on the economy forward as vigorously as he should be defending his cognitive capabilities, the nation might not be in such a precarious position economically. Instead, American families are left grappling with inflation rates that remind one of a cruel April Fool’s joke.
As the clock ticks, and with Mr. Biden set to become the oldest sitting president by the end of his current term at the age of 82, questions about his ability to lead for another four years loom large. Coupled with a potential Democratic primary challenge, there may be more revelations to uncover. If only the Democrats could engage with reality as fervently as they wish their chosen candidate to succeed, perhaps the narrative around Biden would shift from jovial platitudes to actual accountability. Apparently, though, fantasies are just more comfortable than confronting the truth.
