Seattle City Councilwoman Tammy Morales, along with other council members from major cities, held a virtual press conference to demand the recall of Kias and Hyundais due to the high number of thefts associated with these vehicles. Morales blamed the automakers for creating cars that are susceptible to theft and expressed concern for the working-class individuals who rely on these cars for their daily commute and tasks. According to the Seattle Police Department, Kias and Hyundais were the most commonly stolen cars in the city, contributing to the 8,300 vehicles stolen the previous year. These vehicles have become popular targets for young thieves participating in the “Kia Boyz TikTok challenge,” which exploits the ease of entering and stealing these cars.

Morales emphasized that the presence of inexperienced young people driving these stolen cars also poses a disruption in neighborhoods. The situation has escalated to the point where these vehicles are being used to ram into stores and facilitate theft. Stolen Kias have risen by a staggering 300%, while stolen Hyundais have surged by 500% from 2021 to 2022 in Seattle.
Highlighting the coalition of council members from across the country, Morales stressed the need for the manufacturers to take responsibility and address this issue seriously. Seattle has even passed a resolution demanding the recall of these vehicles and joined an ongoing lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai.
In response to the allegations, Hyundai released a statement in May 2023, reaffirming their commitment to customer security. They mentioned ongoing efforts to install software upgrades, distribute steering wheel locks, and offer insurance options through AAA to customers struggling to secure coverage.
It’s unbelievable that instead of holding the criminals accountable for their actions, Seattle City Councilwoman Tammy Morales is blaming the automakers. These manufacturers are not responsible for the criminal activities of young thieves participating in some silly TikTok challenge. It’s clear that Morales and her cronies are just trying to shift the blame away from the real issue at hand – the lack of law and order in their own city. Instead of focusing on tougher penalties for car thieves and cracking down on crime, they’re wasting their time demanding recalls and filing lawsuits. This is just another example of left-wing politicians prioritizing virtue signaling over common sense solutions. It’s time for Seattle to elect leaders who will actually prioritize the safety and security of their citizens.
