Rep. Elissa Slotkin seems to be breaking the Democrat monotonous chorus line, slipping in a reality check that has left her party in disarray. In a donor video call, the Michigan Democrat slyly acknowledged that President Joe Biden is trailing behind former President Donald Trump in Michigan polls. Slotkin, who is running for U.S. Senate, has decided to take subtle jabs at her own party’s leadership, perhaps sensing the right wing winds of change blowing through the Wolverine State.
Slotkin didn’t hold back when she emphasized that President Biden is lagging behind Trump in their latest polling. She called the current Senate race a dead heat, all the while hinting at Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s decision to retire, marking it as a calculated and necessary move. Slotkin’s stress on Stabenow’s “radical thing” of passing the torch at 70 seemed like a thinly-veiled criticism of Biden’s refusal to step aside despite his party’s enthusiastic push for a younger candidate.

Slotkin’s comments highlight the growing discontent within the Democratic Party, where whispers about Biden’s age and capacity can no longer be ignored. The congresswoman’s choice of words and the urgency she created about her own precarious race underscores a fascinating internal struggle. Yet, her panic seems a bit premature, given that recent polls in June and July have painted her with a slight lead by up to 5 points, much to the chagrin of fear-mongering liberals.
Expect Slotkin to spar with former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers, who is expected to bring some much-needed conservative sanity back to the political arena. Her acknowledgment of a “dead heat” in her race could either be a cunning strategy or a desperate plea to galvanize her base. Either way, it appears she’s grasping at straws.
Adding fuel to the fire, former President Trump holds a slim 0.7% lead over Biden in Michigan, according to FiveThirtyEight’s polling average as of July 10. With such tight margins, one can expect the Democratic Party’s behind-the-scenes anxieties to erupt into full-blown panic, further destabilizing their already fragile unity. As the winds of change continue to rattle the Democrats’ ship, it’s evident that Slotkin’s veiled criticisms are just the tip of the iceberg.
