The current overall advisory for Mexico is classified as level two, which suggests that travelers should “exercise increased caution.” However, things do vary by state—some areas even have a level four “do not travel” warning due to heightened crime and cartel issues.
Recent events, such as the death of notorious drug lord El Mencho in a Mexican military operation, have sparked violent retaliations in regions popular with tourists. This has accentuated the arguments for why potential visitors need to stay informed and prepared.
