Supreme Court Rejects Cohen’s Attempt To Sue Trump Again

A certain ex-lawyer-turned-self-proclaimed martyr, Michael Cohen, has once again tried to strike a legal blow against former President Donald Trump, along with Bill Barr and a few government officials, after having gotten a taste of prison life following his perjury conviction. This latest escapade was rolling out like a bad courtroom drama until the U.S. Supreme Court decided it had enough of Cohen’s theatrics and left him in legal limbo.

Cohen boldly claimed that his journey back to prison in 2020 was nothing short of the government’s revenge scheme, sparked by his literary debut, “Disloyal: A Memoir: The True Story of the Former Personal Attorney to President Donald J. Trump.” Apparently, Cohen thinks that airing his dirty laundry, while still being a convicted felon, somehow grants him superhero immunity from the consequences of his actions. The crux of his suit was that the Bureau of Prisons was punishing him for exercising his so-called First Amendment right—a right that he apparently interprets as the freedom to slander his former boss while simultaneously expecting a get-out-of-jail-free card.

In a rare moment of clarity, one judge initially sided with Cohen, claiming the move back to jail was retaliatory. This judge seemed to forget that Cohen’s book, which paints Trump in less-than-flattering light, wouldn’t make him the poster child for free speech anytime soon. However, the sense of justice reigned supreme in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, which informed Cohen that since he had eventually been released back to home confinement, he was out of luck in seeking damages. Talk about a plot twist that even Hollywood couldn’t script!

Adding the cherry on top, the Supreme Court resolutely shut the door on Cohen’s appeal, leaving him flailing in the wind with his legal fantasies. Alina Habba, one of Trump’s attorneys, rightly observed that it was about time Cohen took his loss like an adult instead of playing the victim card. She bluntly stated that Cohen had already worn out his welcome in legal circles with his incessant attempts to drag Trump into his personal drama.

Cohen’s lawsuit, at its core, was more about leveraging his brief fame as a disgraced former lawyer than any real concern for legal principles. Trump was clearly the unwilling target in Cohen’s quest for relevance, not undisputed legal accountability. As Cohen continues to find himself on the losing side of the judicial system, one must wonder how many more legal struggles it will take before he decides to retire his melodrama for good.
