In a not-so-quiet corner of Austin, Texas, a Tesla dealership became the latest spot for suspicious incidents that have been plaguing Elon Musk’s electric vehicle empire. The Austin Police Department, perhaps better known for their coffee-sipping deterrents than their detective work, responded to reports of incendiary devices that had turned up at the dealership. The mention of “incendiary” naturally raises eyebrows but, luckily, police managed to collect the devices without anyone getting their eyebrows singed.
As far as wild incidents go, this one is just another in a string of bizarre (and malignantly creative) attacks on Tesla vehicles and dealerships nationwide. It seems hardly a week goes by without some aspiring arsonist taking aim at one of Musk’s creations. The FBI has even issued a stern warning that implicates suspicious activity at Tesla locations, effectively launching a nationwide “Look Out for Tesla Torchers” campaign. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when driving an electric vehicle feels more dangerous than giving out candy on Halloween.
The FBI alert comes on the heels of a surge in arson, gunfire, and other forms of vandalism targeting Tesla outlets across the country. So far this year, at least nine states have reported the shenanigans, ranging from random attacks to calculated arson attempts. Folks must have missed the memo that these cars run off batteries and not the fumes of a torch-wielding maniac. The sheer creativity required for such tactics brings new meaning to “going green,” but apparently, for some, that just translates to “burning down the establishment.”

In the last week alone, Tesla dealerships in Las Vegas and Kansas City faced off against reckless vandals who apparently mistook their vehicles for piñatas. Before that, an arsonist was caught in Seattle dousing a Tesla with gasoline. Someone has clearly taken their electric vehicle beef too far, opting to use actual fire rather than simply letting their grievances be known at the ballot box or on social media. This kind of behavior begs the question: is the battery-powered vehicle really the target, or is this an all-out assault on the concept of free market innovation?
Elon Musk getting back in the good books of President Trump, by purchasing a Tesla as a show of support, adds a cheeky twist to this saga. Nothing says “I stand by you” quite like a flashy purchase that symbolizes both technological advancement and a willingness to thumb one’s nose at the haters. As state and federal officials put their heads together to crack down on these incendiary antics, one can only hope that, much like a well-crafted Tesla advertisement, this saga will end with everyone finding their way back to the light!
