It’s absolutely predictable how the left spins every political fight as a moral crisis—especially when it suits their narrative. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, draped in his usual West Coast sanctimony, wants Americans to believe that President Trump is deliberately “using hungry people” as pawns during a government shutdown. Newsom paints Trump as a cold-hearted villain willing to let millions suffer rather than negotiate in good faith. But this grandstanding exposes the real game at play: liberal incompetence and a desperate bid to distract from their own failure to manage the budget and run a government.
Sure, people relying on SNAP benefits need support. No one disputes that. But let’s be honest—this isn’t some new tactic ripped from the darkest political playbook. Shutting down the government and negotiating under pressure has been part of American politics far longer than Newsom has been governor. The real shame here? The Democrats have spent years expanding welfare rolls and loosening fiscal responsibility—and suddenly they act surprised when the bill comes due. Now they want to play the saint and accuse Trump of “shameful” tactics while themselves refusing to control spending or secure the border.

Newsom’s sanctimonious sermon invoking Bible verses about feeding the poor is particularly rich coming from a state that prides itself on progressive virtue signaling while housing millions of homeless and starving citizens right on its streets. California’s approach is to throw money at social programs that don’t fix root problems and then blame others when those programs run short. It’s classic left-wing mismanagement: Create dependency, fail to balance the budget, then point fingers as the crisis worsens. Meanwhile, Trump is portrayed as the bad guy for demanding accountability and a return to the rule of law.
The hypocrisy runs even deeper when you look at the selective outrage. The left only cares about “starving people” when it fits their narrative. The same liberals who push open borders that strain resources refuse to acknowledge the chaos they’ve unleashed. SNAP benefits and food aid aren’t charity; they’re part of a system rigged to keep Americans dependent on Washington.
