In the wake of the horrific massacre of Jewish civilians in Israel on October 7th, several members of Congress have made distressing and problematic statements. The actions of the 15 House Democrats who refused to vote for a resolution condemning Hamas terrorists for their barbaric bloodshed are particularly concerning. But one individual, Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, stands out for her offensive words and deeds.
Tlaib has, for days, refused to denounce Hamas directly for their decapitation of innocent babies. Her initial response to the Jewish massacre was nothing short of disgraceful. She engaged in victim-blaming and called for America to abandon its ally, Israel, on the very day of the terrorist attack. She tried to justify her vote against the resolution by claiming it was “one-sided.” Well, of course, it was one-sided—it was against Hamas and their brutality towards innocent men, women, and children. Tlaib saw this as a reason to oppose the measure, showing her lack of moral clarity.
But Tlaib’s reprehensible behavior didn’t stop there. She spread dangerous misinformation, accusing Israel of bombing a hospital in Gaza, an allegation that turned out to be false. In reality, an errant rocket fired by Islamic Jihad from within Gaza hit the hospital’s parking lot, causing minimal damage. The evidence that absolved Israel quickly emerged, with US intelligence and other independent sources confirming their innocence. Yet Tlaib continues to keep her false social media post alive to this day.

Even a week later, Tlaib added fuel to the fire by tweeting doubts about Israel’s claims, ignoring the clear evidence of their innocence. She even cited the anti-Semitic United Nations and called for an “independent investigation” despite one already being conducted and confirming the truth. Tlaib’s actions clearly show she has no interest in the truth or evidence, further perpetuating her egregious lies against Israel.
It is clear that Tlaib is a bigot spewing Hamas propaganda and spreading misinformation. House Republicans are expected to vote on a resolution to censure her for her anti-Semitic lies. It is disappointing to hear reports that some Republicans are hesitant, citing concerns about freedom of speech. Censuring Tlaib is not about silencing her; it is about holding her accountable for her dangerous conduct and standing up against her hatred of the Jewish state.
Every single House Republican should be willing to censure Tlaib. This is not about taking away her rights, but about publicly rebuking her for her actions. Tlaib blamed Israel and America for an incident that never happened and continued to promote the falsehood even after it was debunked. Her behavior crosses multiple lines, making a censure entirely appropriate.
On a political level, this vote should unite Republicans and put pressure on House Democrats, who’ve struggled with handling anti-Semites within their ranks in the past. Republicans now have the opportunity to take a stand against Tlaib’s egregious words and conduct. It should be a no-brainer. Censure her and send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
