During the spotlight of Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary episode, Tom Hanks made the bold move to alienate half of America with his latest skit, and it wasn’t pretty. The Hollywood heavyweight, known more for his roles in heartwarming films than for his political acumen, chose to mock Trump supporters in a way that would make even the most jaded critic cringe. In a misguided attempt at humor, Hanks painted hardworking, salt-of-the-earth Americans as foolish and out-of-touch, inadvertently showcasing just how out of step Hollywood is with real America.
Hanks took on a character named Doug, donning a red Make America Great Again hat in a segment they dubbed “Black Jeopardy.” This isn’t the first time Hanks has gone down this road; his character first appeared in a 2016 episode of SNL that sought to find common ground between working-class black individuals and rural Trump enthusiasts. There’s a thin line between comedy and contempt, and Hanks decided to dance right over it, stepping on the pride of millions of Americans who simply want a better future for their families.

While Hanks may think he’s making an insightful social commentary, many see his antics as an all-time low. He not only disrespected half of the country but managed to belittle the faith of countless Americans in the process. By mocking churchgoers with a pompous question about their attendance, Hanks attempted to craft a narrative that simply doesn’t resonate with the grassroots that form the backbone of the country. The idea that a Hollywood elite, comfortably ensconced in his bubble, knows anything about the lives of Trump supporters is laughable at best.
The skit was rightly met with backlash. Critics pointed out that the left’s false narrative about racism among Trump supporters falls flat in the face of reality. Trump’s 2024 campaign is arguably one of the least racially divisive in recent history, dispelling the myth in the minds of Hollywood elites that only Democrats can claim to be inclusive. Indeed, many former Democrats are realizing the party’s true colors and making the switch to America First values. In doing so, they are rejecting the narrative pushed by the likes of Hanks and the SNL team.
The fallout from this skit only serves to highlight the divide between the disconnected elite and everyday Americans. Hanks and his liberal cohorts are so misguided they don’t realize that their derision only fuels Trump’s popularity. A wave of former Democrat supporters is replacing their party loyalty with a commitment to conservative values, and SNL’s laughable attempts to insult them will only encourage more voters to jump ship. So, let the Hollywood farce continue—every absurd moment is another push towards a more unified America, where the patriotic spirit triumphs over Hollywood’s incessant mockery.
