Trump Acts to Ensure Only Citizens Vote in US Elections

President Donald Trump has taken a significant step in ensuring the integrity of American elections by signing an executive order mandating proof of citizenship for voter registration. In a nation where just 35 states currently require some form of identification to vote, this order aims to bolster the security of the electoral process and make it crystal clear that only American citizens should have a say in who leads the country.

The order tasks Attorney General Pam Bondi with forming information-sharing agreements with state election authorities to track down instances of voter fraud. It makes it explicitly clear that if states refuse to comply with these measures, they risk losing federal funding related to election activities. This isn’t just tough talk; it’s action that demands accountability from states that skirt their responsibilities.

Under the new mandate, voters will need to present government-issued proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Acceptable forms of identification will include a U.S. passport, a REAL ID, or military and state IDs that indicate citizenship. The move has been met with widespread approval from the electorate, as a poll indicated that a hefty 65 percent of Americans, including a notable percentage of Democrats and swing voters, back the idea of proving citizenship to vote. In the land of the free, the notion that only those legally in the country can impact its governance seems like common sense.

For as long as anyone can remember, the issue of noncitizen voting has been a hot topic, yet it remains largely unaddressed at the federal level. Despite the fact that noncitizens are prohibited from participating in elections, the absence of stringent verification measures raises a troubling question: how can anyone be sure that noncitizens aren’t casting ballots? The House Republicans took a step toward solving this issue last year by passing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, aimed at tightening the screws on noncitizen voting. While Democrats seem less than eager to support these efforts in the Senate, Trump is wisely taking matters into his own hands.

If the SAVE Act were to be fully enacted, it would reflect a significant commitment to election integrity. The legislation would require state officials to clarify the citizenship status of potential voters before issuing registration forms. In a shocking revelation, a report from the New York Post suggested that without requiring proof of citizenship, noncitizens have been able to obtain voting forms in almost all states. The proposed measures would ensure that states are equipped to check voter rolls and purify them of any noncitizens, because let’s face it—a democracy runs best when it’s actually a democracy.

Trump’s executive order serves as a crucial impetus in the fight for free, fair elections. It emphasizes that only votes from American citizens count, echoing the prevailing sentiment supported by a majority of Americans. By directing the Election Assistance Commission to revise the federal voter registration form to include proof of citizenship, and to ensure that mail-in ballots received post-Election Day aren’t counted, Trump’s approach is about maintaining the sanctity of U.S. elections. As the nation navigates these complex waters, one thing becomes clear: when it comes to who gets to vote, American citizenship should be non-negotiable.
