In a rather surreal scene, former President Donald Trump, joined by his sidekick JD Vance, graced New York City’s memorial plaza to honor the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks on the 23rd anniversary of that fateful day. The lineup was interesting, to say the least, as they stood shoulder to shoulder with President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senator Chuck Schumer, and former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. One would think that a somber occasion like this would be devoid of political embellishments, but that’s never the case when Democrats are in the mix.
Trump and Vance arrived prepared to pay their respects, emphasizing their commitment to the victims and their families. Meanwhile, in a bizarre twist, the crowd erupted in cheering such as “We love you!” and “Donald!” as if it were the final concert of a rock star. It’s not every day that a former president finds himself in a cheering match while another president looks on awkwardly. Biden and Harris stood by, likely wishing the ground would swallow them whole, as New Yorkers made it crystal clear who their heart really belonged to.

It was particularly rich for Harris to try and position herself as a champion of democracy after her blatant audacity at the previous night’s debate. In an attempt to score political points, she had the gall to claim that the January 6 protest was the worst attack on democracy since the Civil War. Apparently, she forgot this little thing called 9/11. One can only hope she didn’t take too long to digest that reality; the irony of her comments echoing beneath an event honoring those lost on 9/11 was palpable to any level-headed observer.
The juxtaposition of the two sides at this memorial was striking. On one hand, you had Trump acknowledged by the crowd, and on the other, a vice president trying to salvage her dignity after making such sensational comments just a day before the actual memorial. This isn’t just a slip of the tongue; it’s indicative of how out of touch the current administration appears to be with the sentiments of Americans. Everyone knows 9/11 and the ensuing period changed the fabric of America, while the January 6 events pale in comparison. Yet here we are, watching a vice president trivialize history while trying to score political points.
As Biden and Harris were set to make their way to Pennsylvania for a wreath-laying at the Flight 93 memorial, the contrast only deepened. Trump, showing respect for the fallen and their families, also planned to visit Shanksville, reminding everyone of the strength and resilience he stands for. In a country yearning for certainty and leadership, the scene depicted the ongoing clash between a former president who evokes passion and enthusiasm, and an administration that has resorted to gaslighting Americans about national tragedies.
