In a recent announcement on his Truth Social platform, former President Donald Trump threw his support behind David Covey, who is running for the speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. Trump wasted no time in criticizing Covey’s opponent, Dade Phelan, for his role in the “Fraudulent Impeachment” of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Trump described Covey as an “America First Conservative” who will prioritize securing the border, restoring election integrity, protecting families and the military, and defending the Second Amendment.
This endorsement comes as no surprise, as Trump has been a vocal critic of Phelan in the past. In 2021, he called out Phelan’s “weak RINO leadership in the State House.” Phelan, on the other hand, has attempted to align himself with Trump, stating that he has voted for him twice before and plans on voting for him a third time. However, Trump was unimpressed with Phelan’s claims, asserting that his words do not mitigate the “Absolute Embarrassment” he inflicted upon Texas and the Republican Party.

The impeachment trial of Ken Paxton, which Phelan was involved in, was based on allegations of bribery, misapplication of public resources, and false statements. Paxton was eventually acquitted by the Texas Senate, but the process was highly controversial and costly. Paxton himself condemned the impeachment as a “sham” orchestrated by the Biden Administration, Phelan, and a “kangaroo court.” In Trump’s eyes, this ordeal left a “dark and permanent stain” on the Texas House.
With Trump’s endorsement, David Covey has gained a major boost in his campaign for the Texas House of Representatives. Trump expressed his total confidence in Covey, vowing that he will never let the people of Texas down. It remains to be seen how this endorsement will impact the election, but one thing is certain – Texas politics just got even more interesting.
