Donald Trump is proving that he hasn’t lost his edge when it comes to foreign policy, as he recently reaffirmed his commitment to shaking up NATO and making sure its members pay their fair share. The former president announced plans to pursue an aggressive defense spending strategy, lifting the burden off of the American taxpayer while compelling European allies to step up to the plate.
During a recent press conference in the Oval Office, he tackled the hot-button issue of military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. While promising to negotiate a peace deal with Ukraine’s President Zelensky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Trump made it clear that the United States isn’t a bottomless pit of cash. Trump’s commentary underscored a constant refrain: if NATO countries want to continue their support for Ukraine, they better start coughing up some serious cash. In an eye-popping suggestion, he proposed raising NATO’s defense spending requirement from the current two percent of GDP to a whopping five percent. This was ripped straight from his “Make NATO Great Again” playbook, a strategy that fell flat with European leaders during his first term but serves as a loud wake-up call now.
The history of NATO’s spending practices is bleak, with only six out of 29 member countries meeting the bare minimums when Trump took office back in 2017. The lack of urgency was practically laughable, with European leaders snickering at the suggestion they should contribute more to their own defense needs while the U.S. stood guard. But the ongoing War in Ukraine has suddenly changed the tune, resulting in a scramble to meet spending commitments. As of now, 23 out of 32 NATO members are finally stepping up to the plate and reaching the two percent threshold.
Trump’s jabs might have drawn smiles from European diplomats before, but the reality of a resurgent Russia in the wake of the war has everyone rethinking their approach. Now, there’s palpable pressure for them to bolster their military budgets, and the idea that the U.S. will continue not only funding but also protecting a continent full of wealth is becoming less tenable. It’s about time European nations recognize that being a member of the alliance isn’t just about enjoying the perks while letting Uncle Sam foot the bill.
