The former president, Donald Trump, is leading the race among South Carolina Republican voters by a massive 28-point gap, leaving their former governor, Nikki Haley, in the dust. A recent poll conducted by Monmouth University and The Washington Post from September 6th to 11th found that a staggering 46% of likely primary GOP voters would choose Trump as their preferred candidate for the 2024 presidential nomination. Meanwhile, Haley received a mere 18% of the support, and Senator Tim Scott trailed behind with only 10%.

It appears that a significant portion of Republican respondents harbor doubts about the legitimacy of the 2020 election. Over one-third of likely Republican voters acknowledged President Joe Biden’s victory as “fair and square.” However, when it comes to Trump supporters, only 7% agreed with the sentiment. Furthermore, a whopping 57% of supposed Republican respondents claimed that the election was riddled with fraud, with an overwhelming 87% of Trump supporters echoing that sentiment. Even among those who favored other candidates, close to one-third also attributed Biden’s win to fraudulent activities.
Haley made waves during the Republican National Committee’s primary debate by voicing her support for certain cases of protected abortions. However, this stance did not resonate with a significant portion of the respondents, as 38% of all respondents believed that abortion should be illegal. Among Trump supporters, a substantial 73% shared this view.
Although Haley experienced a surge in national poll numbers following her debate performance, she was the sole candidate who polled high enough to surpass Biden outside the margin of error. The poll itself had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.
