In a move that has put an end to the bewildering uncertainty surrounding Ronna McDaniel’s future as chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), former President Donald Trump has finally spoken up and released a list of endorsements for her replacement. Trump’s pick for the new RNC chair is none other than Michael Whatley, the current chairman of the Republican Party of North Carolina.
Trump, in his usual grandiose style, highlighted Whatley’s strong commitment to promoting election integrity as his primary reason for endorsing him. The former president emphasized the importance of the RNC being a reliable partner in the upcoming presidential election, ensuring fair and transparent elections across the country, and working closely with his campaign to secure another victory for the Republican Party.

In fact, their supermajority in the state has allowed them to override Democratic Governor Roy Cooper’s vetoes on critical issues such as election integrity.
Whatley’s background is equally impressive. Besides his role as chair of the state party, he also serves as the general counsel for the national RNC and has been involved in various capacities within the Republican Party. This includes working as a federal law clerk, serving in the George W. Bush Administration, and being involved in the Trump-Pence Campaign and Transition Teams. Not to mention, his experience with the infamous 2000 Florida recount, which ultimately decided the presidency in favor of George W. Bush, may come in handy if the 2024 election faces similar challenges.
However, it’s important to note that Whatley’s rise to prominence hasn’t been without controversy. He faced a lawsuit from his own party members last year, accusing him of irregularities during his own re-election process and disregarding rules that he himself had written. The lawsuit raised concerns about the legitimacy of his position and the party’s commitment to election integrity. Some critics have also labeled Whatley as an establishment figure due to his associations with the Bush administration.
While Trump’s endorsement carries considerable weight within the Republican Party, there are still no guarantees that Whatley will officially assume the role of RNC chair. According to RNC rules, members have the opportunity to vote and elect the chairman through a voting process. So, until the body meets after the South Carolina primary later this month, nothing is set in stone.
