In a recent letter to the U.S. District Court of Southern New York, Alina Habba, the attorney for former President Donald Trump, brought some rather shocking news to light. It appears that Judge Lewis Kaplan, who presided over the $83.3 million defamation suit against President Trump, once served as a mentor to the lawyer representing E. Jean Carroll in the case.
The attorney pointed out that Judge Kaplan’s previous mentoring relationship with Roberta Kaplan, who is representing Carroll in the lawsuit, was not disclosed before the case proceeded. Habba strongly believes that this is a serious conflict of interest and should have been disclosed from the start.

Habba also brought attention to the fact that another lead counsel for Carroll, Shawn Crowley, was a law clerk for Judge Kaplan, and the judge even co-officiated her wedding. It’s no wonder that the defense and Judge Kaplan had “many clashes” during the trial against Trump.
In response to this shocking revelation, Habba stated that she will argue that the court displayed preferential treatment towards Roberta Kaplan and was overtly hostile towards the defense counsel and President Trump.
It’s not just about the mentoring relationship, though. Habba pointed out that Judge Kaplan stopped another lawsuit in which Trump sued Carroll for defamation, claiming that the jury had demonstrated the claim of rape was “substantially true,” despite Carroll’s public claim that Trump had raped her.
This latest bombshell comes in the midst of an ongoing legal battle between Trump and Carroll, with an appeal already underway for the previous $5 million award to Carroll. Trump has vehemently denied meeting Carroll, and his repeated denials have led to her defamation suit.
