Donald Trump’s election has set off a seismic shift in the Republican approach to immigration, tearing down the barriers that previously held the party back from taking decisive action against illegal immigration and related crime. Before Trump, GOP leaders seemed shackled by the fear of upsetting the so-called “politically correct” crowd, opting instead for toothless rhetoric that failed to produce real results. With Trump in the driver’s seat, that timid approach hit the ground running right into a brick wall of real reform.
