President-elect Donald Trump is stepping into the White House with a legal edge that could put a swift end to President Joe Biden’s intimate circle of appointees. Thanks to an amusing twist in the courtroom drama stemming from former Trump White House spokesman Sean Spicer’s dismissal from a Navy Academy board, Trump will wield the authority to outset any of Biden’s 4,000-plus appointments who dare to linger on.
The scenario unfolded after Biden began what can only be described as housecleaning—unloading Trump loyalists from prestigious positions. Rather than focusing on actual pressing issues, like the chaotic exit from Afghanistan, Biden seemed hell-bent on expunging any remnants of the previous administration from the boards of the Naval Academy, West Point, and the Air Force Academy. As Spicer found out, Biden took a scalpel to Trump’s team while neglecting to act on runaway crises.
Spicer wasn’t alone in this legal debacle. He had some company in the form of Russ Vought (now back in Trump’s good graces as the Office of Management and Budget head) and former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway. All were unceremoniously thrown off their boards despite having time left on their terms, which was akin to a bad replay of a sitcom no one asked for. Their attempt to argue against their dismissal was tossed out when a judge declared that presidential appointees are at the mercy of the president, regardless of their mandates. Surprise, surprise.
Trump can fire anybody he wants, thanks to Sean Spicer https://t.co/i7MnXedZjI via @dcexaminer

However, the silver lining in this courtroom caper is that Spicer’s case served a dual purpose. His goal was to establish a precedent that would allow future administrations, particularly a return of Trump, to fire whomever they chose without legal repercussion. The judge’s ruling was a win for Trump supporters who might find comfort in knowing that they could clean house on day one without needing a lawyer’s handbook for guidance.
Essentially, it’s all in the game plan for Trump. With the legal landscape now firmly in place, the incoming president can confidently ditch Biden’s picks and blame it on the very same administration that argued for the right to do so. The irony is rich. In a twist worthy of a political comedy, Biden has now unintentionally paved the way for Trump to streamline his power plays and set the stage for a much more loyal team. It appears that while Biden may have thought he was pulling the strings, he’s really just the unknowing architect of Trump’s impending purges.
