The bureaucratic titans of Washington are currently reeling from the seismic shockwaves delivered by President Trump’s bold moves to dismantle the status quo, particularly within the Department of Education. For decades, this institution has been nothing more than an expensive echo chamber, drowning in its own inefficiency while failing to produce any substantial educational gains for American students. Thankfully, someone is finally audacious enough to take action against this educational leviathan.
The origins of the Department of Education are rooted in political maneuvering, specifically, President Jimmy Carter’s attempt to buy the allegiance of teachers’ unions with taxpayer dollars. What was initially framed as a progressive advancement for educational standards has turned out to be a colossal waste of over $3 trillion since its inception. The return on this staggering investment? A steady decline in student performance, exemplified by stark statistics that demonstrate how countless fourth and eighth graders are floundering in reading and math. The current state of education paints a dire picture—a picture that speaks volumes about the colossal failure of federal oversight.
Despite the mind-numbing expenditures and dismal outcomes, some politicians still cling to the notion that federal involvement in education is beneficial. Yet, it is only logical to question how much longer this charade can continue when the evidence is blatantly clear: The more the federal government meddles, the worse education gets. The Constitution does not grant the federal government any authority over education, and the Founding Fathers would surely be rolling in their graves if they could see the bureaucratic nightmare that has emerged since the Department’s establishment.
